buyer's remorse

I passed up this outfit for Nathan at the antique mall even though I seriously considered purchasing it. On one hand, I would have had the best, albeit pansiest, outfit for my son but on the other hand, my husband would have had immediate grounds for divorce, the reason scribbled under “irreconciable differences” would be: DRESSED MY SON UP AS SAILOR MOON. Did I make a mistake? Should I have just bought it?

Do you think Buddha ever had a bad day and was like, “Guys, no laughing today. I just rented The Notebook and I just need to cry!”

  1. When I have a child, I will no doubt dress him or her up in sailor suits. Although I think I would want to go for a Victorian babyhood vibe, less Sailor Moon. Either way, the suit is tre awesome and you should have purchased it in order to prevent all of those Anne Geddes fanatics from getting it in their central Washington clutches.

You definitely passed a good opportunity for awesome-ness. You could have purchased the matching blouse from JC Pennys and had the perfect mother/son brunch outfits!

You should only buy that suit if you have the follow-through to curl Nathan’s hair into perfect spirals and teach him to sing “The Good Ship Lollipop.”

You can’t go halfway when you dress a kid in that.

  4. The Introvert says:

Of course you should’ve bought it! How much longer will you be able to dress him like a pansy before he starts dressing himself and wearing wallet chains and saggy jeans?

  5. I have a sister-in-law who dresses her sons like that (an almost 3-year-old and a baby). Sadly, the older one also has longish blonde ringlets and has NEVER been taken for a boy, even while wearing a blue bib that says “I AM NOT A GIRL.” I expect them to be suffering under the weight of some serious therapy bills in the future.

  6. It just doesn’t look like Nathan.

  7. I resent that this outfit was even for sale at an antique mall. I had one quite similar as a child.

    Hi Mona,

Just wanted to let you know that Angelo Villagomez wore a little outfit like that when he was a year old. Might be the same outfit. Love your blog! Donna (Angelo’s Mom)

    OMG, that outfit, hilarious!

I dressed my son in a sailor-type of outfit when he was an infant but it was a bit more toned down. My hubby definitely would have divorced me too if I went this outrageous.

I swear my brother (who is now 28) had that same outfit when we were kids. I had a sailor dress and my mom had our picture taken in those get-ups.

I think the real question is, are those Buddha’s earlobes flopped casually on his shoulders? And if so, why is he laughing? Does he not know that earlobes should not look like that and he probably has earlobe cancer?

Absolutely you should have bought Nathan that outfit.

  13. Bananas says:

Ok, I totally love this post. And yes, I think “Dressed son in sailor suit” IS grounds for divorce.

I seem to remember that my brother had an outfit just like that!

My MIL also claims to have had one for my hubby when he was young too.

I would have gotten it and used it for Halloween
