Vote my husband for Poet Populist!

My husband Mike has been nominated for this year’s Poet Populist. It’s like becoming Poet Laureate, only the public gets to vote. My husband is very excited to have been nominated and really deserves your vote.

Please vote for Mike Hickey. Tell all your friends, families, barbers, bakers, babysitters, farmers market vendors, toastmasters, baristas, and everyone you know might have internet access to vote for my husband. Online voting starts today and will continue until November 4th.

UPDATE: After submitting your email address, zip code and vote (for Mike Hickey!), check your inbox for a verfication email!

Here’s one of my favorite poems:

I find a black & white photograph
after your funeral
while sifting through the attic
Diaphanous dust & lacy spider webs.

In the photo I am six months old
You toss me into the air & catch me
Which scares mother even in her dreams
Grandma would later insist this made me hyperactive

But I love it & crawl to you immediately
when you return from work.
In ensuing years we declare war on each other:
Vicious insults, violent assaults, long hair, drugs,

shoplifting, Vietnam protests, cops are pigs, religion lost
& disappointment we wear like bulletproof vests.
Now, kneeling down in the attic, I pray for you,
thankful we had the chance to forgive &

I finally realize the thrill
wasn’t being thrown in the air,
the thrill was in the wild reassurance
of being caught.

WOW. Honestly – and even if this sounds like a backsided compliment, it is NOT – but I never saw Mike (ya know, on here) and assumed he could write so beautifully. I thought funny was his thing. šŸ™‚

That was just great! I did vote, but I don’t know if it was truly accepted because it says that about the zip code and all.

  18. shirley eugist says:

Hey, what if all of us non-Seattleites voted anyway, just put our real zip code in, and then they’d be so impressed by his showing in the general populace that they’d like, count us anyway?
