sugared past

I used to collect these

I was reminded by my Photojojo time capsule that I had posted a picture this time last year.

For a brief period in my late teens, I collected sugar packets from diners and restaurants. Whenever I had a pretty awesome meal, I would grab a sugar packet from the table and scribble in the margins the date of the meal, restaurant name and who my dining partner was, which is all the information I could legibly fit on these tiny pieces.

It was the closest thing I’ve ever had to a hobby, but it, along with my youth, dissipated. I’m actually kind of glad I did because if I kept a sugar packet from every meal I’ve had in the seven years I’ve lived in Seattle, I would be featured on that TLC documentary about hoarders.

That’s a pretty unique collection though. Bet nobody else has done that…

My mom doesn't collect them, per se. She more like takes them. Because you know, we need more junk at home that we aren't going to use.

I saw that show! I mean, I like to keep stuff too (I have a problem with office supplies and fabrics), but when you're stuff takes up so much of your living space that you sleep on the floor in a space that's the size of a crib and your landlord calls the fire marshall regularly because there is no clear path to the door or window? Then someone needs to call up A&E and stage an intervention.

They make a little dining out diary now… I saw one at Books-a-Million. We’ll have to get you one for your b-day, those sugar packs look a little withered.

OMG! Have you *seen* those documentaries??? That is so weird, that could never, ever be you Mona.

I think it’s pretty cool that you kept “notes.”
