Last night I saw Eugene Mirman at the Columbia City Theater. I’ve been a huge fan of his since 2000 when his website had strange selfie videos. He’s the voice of Gene on Bob’s Burgers, one of my favorite shows ever.
Nathan is an even bigger fan than I am and constantly quotes Gene, but out of context. At the park, Nathan shouted in front of everyone, “Oh are you going to throw me up into the tree so it looks like I climbed like a normal boy?” Another time at the grocery store, he said, “You put my baby brother in your purse and that was the last I ever saw of him! Javier Belcher! I love you!” To which I have to retort to all these gawkers: “I have never put your brother in my purse! And his name is not Javier!”
The show was incredibly funny and in such an intimate, historical theater. He read angry, hilarious letters and showed paintings he wants to submit to Whole Foods.
Afterward, I bought a poster and took a photo.
I had toyed with the idea of asking Eugene to say a video message to Nathan in the voice of Gene but I chickened out. Instead, I awkwardly blurted out how my kid is such a fan and he quotes Bob Burger’s better than I can and Eugene replied, “That seems fair!”
